Hugh had a workout regime that will make your eyes water. Firstly he trained between 60 and 90 minutes and secondly he trained very early in the morning, by early I'm talking about 4am in the morning some mornings because of his acting commitments.

Hugh's workout consisted of two types of training regime; the first was a muscle building phase and the second was a strength training phase.

The muscle building phase consisted of changing the tempo of the lifting rather than the amount of weight being lifted. The tempo involved taking 3 seconds to lift the weight up then taking 1 second to bring it back down during one workout then changing to 2 seconds up and 3 seconds down the next thus are giving a different tempo every workout.

The idea behind this is that the muscles are constantly forced to adapt to the change in training and this makes the muscles grow in size.

The strength training phase involved lifting extremely heavy weights, as heavy as possible for as many reps as possible (normally around the 5 to 6 rep mark). This strength training doesn't necessarily build size but builds a huge strength base that saw Hugh benching 315 pounds (143 kg) by the time they started filming the Xmen: Origins film.

Each session whether it was a muscle building or strength training workout started off with a cardio warm up before moving into the weight session then finally finishing off with a cardio workout involving running or swimming for 20 minutes or so with the exception of Fridays.

Every Friday Hugh had bootcamp, this involved a huge and intense workout that saw him carrying out interval training (possibly with some Fartlek training) and a grueling bodyweight Calisthenic workout. The idea behind this workout was to improve his metabolism to keep him lean but also to enhance his strength, very much like a boxer or martial artist would do.

At the end of each phase (the last week) Hugh had only one weight lifting session and made the rest up in hard cardio sessions to trim off any fat he had accumulated over the weight lifting phase to keep that lean physique.
